El SAR Mesana fou botat el 2010 i va entrar en funcionament el 7 de gener de 2011. En fer-ho va substituïr el VB Antártico. Va costar 12,6 milions d'euros, i amb el SAR Gavia i el SAR Mastelero forma part d'una comanda de tres remolcadors de salvament marítim similars.
